My LFS Build – 03 Installing on VirtualBox …

Start the VirtualBox PC …

Once the TinyCore has booted up :
B-install-vm-01
type in tinycore text (enter)

After a few moments – you’re screen will look like this (may take 10 seconds) :

type in sudo su (enter)

Your screen looks like this:

Type in : dmesg | grep -i hd (enter)
look for the line that says `ATA DISK drive` which I’ve highlighted in red
the line starts with hda, which means our hard disk is called /dev/hda

Type in : dmesg | grep -i cd-rom (enter)
look for the line that says `CD-ROM` which I’ve highlighted in green
the line starts with hdc, which means our cd/dvd drive is called /dev/hdc

Now we’re just going to setup the partitions on this disk (remember! your disk will be wiped!)
So, type in fdisk /dev/hda (enter)

type in n (enter)
type in p (enter)
type in 1 (enter)
( press enter again!)
type in +128M (enter)
at this point – nothing appears to have happened – don’t worry – just carry on …

type in n (enter)
type in p (enter)
type in 2 (enter)
( press enter again!)
type in +128M (enter)
at this point – nothing appears to have happened – don’t worry – just carry on …

type in n (enter)
type in p (enter)
type in 3 (enter)
( press enter again!)
( press enter again!)

Now we’re going to format these new partitions on this disk (remember! your disk will be wiped!)
type in mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda1 (enter)

Ok that’s the boot partition formatted!

type in mkswap /dev/hda2 (enter)

Ok that’s the swap partition formatted!

type in mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda3 (enter)
B-install-vm-08
Ok that’s the root partition formatted!

Eject the CD  (iso image) – via the Devices > CD/DVD devices
Insert the CD (iso image) – via the Devices > CD/DVD devices
… choose HomeBrew_1.iso
A.setup-vm-08

Click Open

Now we’re going to install Disc 1 of 2 – please type in the text carefully ~
also .. please remember that each line may take a while to run !

type in mkdir   /mnt/cdrom (enter)
type in mkdir   /mnt/root (enter)
type in mount   /dev/hdc   /mnt/cdrom (enter)
type in mount   /dev/hda3   /mnt/root (enter)

type in cd /mnt/cdrom/ (enter)

type in tar -zcvf   bin.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   boot.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   etc.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   home.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   lib.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   media.tar.gz  -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   mnt.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   opt.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   root.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   sbin.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   srv.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zcvf   tmp.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)

type in tar -zxvf   usr_bin.tar.gz     -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_doc.tar.gz     -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_etc.tar.gz     -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_icons.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_include.tar.gz -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_info.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_lib.tar.gz     -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_libexec.tar.gz -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_local.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_man.tar.gz     -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_proxy.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_sbin.tar.gz    -C /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf   usr_share.tar.gz   -C /mnt/root/ (enter)

type in cd ~ (enter)
type in umount   /mnt/cdrom (enter)

Eject the CD  (iso image) – via the Devices > CD/DVD devices
Insert the CD (iso image) – via the Devices > CD/DVD devices
… choose HomeBrew_2.iso
A.setup-vm-08

Click Open

Now we’re going to install Disc 2 of 2 – please type in the text carefully ~
also .. please remember that each line may take a while to run !

type in mount /dev/hdc    /mnt/cdrom (enter)
type in cd /mnt/cdrom/ (enter)

type in tar -zxvf usr_src.tar.gz   -C   /mnt/root/ (enter)
type in tar -zxvf var.tar.gz   -C   /mnt/root/ (enter)

type in mkdir   /mnt/root/dev (enter)
type in mkdir   /mnt/root/sys (enter)
type in mkdir   /mnt/root/proc (enter)
type in cp -a /dev/    /mnt/root/dev/ (enter)

type in mount -v –bind /dev /mnt/root/dev (enter)
type in chroot /mnt/root (enter)

Now we’re going to update the Linux boot menu

type in grub-install /dev/hda (enter)
type in echo > /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules (enter)

type in vi /boot/grub.d/grub.cfg +38
type in i (enter)
press type in TAB key
press type in UP ARROW
type in type in root (hd0,3) (enter)
your screen should look like this (changes I’ve highlighted in red):
B-install-vm-10A
press ESC
type :w! (enter)
press ESC
type :q (enter)

type in vi /boot/grub.d/grub.cfg +46
type in i (enter)
press type in TAB key
press type in UP ARROW
type in type in root (hd0,3) (enter)
your screen should look like this (changes I’ve highlighted in red):

press ESC
type :w! (enter)
press ESC
type :q (enter)

Eject the CD  (iso image) – via the Devices > CD/DVD devices

Reboot your Linux Box

When your Linux Box has rebooted – the screen will look like this :

** remember: this network card get’s it’s ip address from DHCP
** login with
user root, password root
